6″ x  8″  French Gem is an altered art piece in my angel series. Created from a 1966 Collins French Gem French-English Dictionary, she waits to aid in fluid conversation. I adored the blue edges of the little book and found they added nicely to the wings.

You Can’t Bank Time

You Can’t Bank Time

6″ x 8″  You Can’t Bank Time is an assemblage piece posted for day 19 of Art Every Day Month. The silver bank was my inspiration for the work as I pondered what we really use banks for nowadays. They are somewhat obsolete. Then, thinking of what we cannot save, the obvious is time, no matter how much we would like to.

On a copperish green landscape of a sundial, the silver pig stands firm as someone tries to bank time. A watch face, hour glass, pocket watch, clock hands and silver beads representing seconds of time, hover but cannot be stashed away.

Drinking Outside the Box

Drinking Outside the Box

4″ x  6″ x 10″   Drinking Outside the Box is an assemblage piece in my teapot series. It has been a little while since I’ve done any new teapot sculptures, mainly because I usually work around a special items that I’ll find, and I just hadn’t found any cool pots lately, until this one popped up.

The base is a wooden box from a set of children’s nesting boxes. I love the use of whimsical items and it’s a nice shape and solid form. It is wrapped in antique paper and topped with bits of tea papers.

The pouring tea is created from wire, ribbon, chain and beads, and includes a special charm.

Liberty Nutcracker

As a local artist, I was honored to be asked to art up a nutcracker for a fundraiser. The Southwest Virginia Ballet will be holding an online auction soon, with nutcrackers painted, embellished, and re-created by artists from the Roanoke, VA area. Honoring my NY upbringing and the open arms attitude that Lady Liberty stands for, I chose the Statue of Liberty theme for mine.

Lady Liberty Nutcracker

Liberty is about 14″ tall. She began her transformation as a unisex, bare wood form. Being an assemblage artist, I’m accustomed to taking an object and recreating it to be something else. Here, I made the form more female, dressed her in a robe created from dress pattern paper, added a stiffening agent, paint, and created her crown, book and torch.

As a child I was able to climb to the top and peek out of one of the windows in the Statue of Liberty’s crown; I’ll never forget it. As an adult, I’m happy to be able to offer my artistic efforts to this fundraiser for the Southwest Virginia Ballet.

By Heather Brush; auction announcement will be made known when available.

Another new gallery show

One Kiss, Frog Prince

I hung my fairy tale series of mixed media and assemblages recently. It feels like a fairy tale to me, being allowed to show my work in another Roanoke gallery. This one is special. 2nd Helpings is a gallery that represents more than 100 artists on a rotating basis. Artists receive a percentage of the sales for their work and all Gallery profits are donated to the Roanoke Rescue Mission to help provide the basics needed: food, shelter and medical attention.

This view shows Pandora’s Box, Cindy’s Slipper, Acts of Kindness and One Kiss, Frog Prince.

This view shows Slow Rider, Rose Red, and Red’s Wolf. Red’s Wolf was photographed to be the cover image of the current issue of Roanoke College’s Roanoke Review, an annual national  journal that publishes poetry and short fiction.

2nd Helpings gallery (and cafe) is at 1502 Williamson Road in Roanoke, Va.

Just a few blocks past the Roanoke Civic Center.
