Boxed Beauty

Boxed Beauty

8″ x 16″ open.  Boxed Beauty is an assemblage piece in a series I am doing that include books. This one is centered on a book I found at Goodwill that was published in 1955, titled, The Handbook of Beauty.

Boxed Beauty

With “over 100 detailed easy-to-follow illustrations” I wanted to showcase the book in a way that viewers could interact, and see the inside. So, I glued sections together so they would stay stiff and sturdy and used bobby pins to “bookmark” certain pages. Hairstyles, how to apply make up, posture advice and so on. How are we modern women becoming beautiful without this book? 😉

Boxed Beauty

The box lid holds a few tools for the lady, including an antique pin, perfume bottle, some pearls and a compact to check her lipstick with. There is a section of advice under the mirror that tells a lady how proportioned she is supposed to be: “A waistline 7 to 9 inches smaller than your bust.”

The piece can be made to stay open and hang on a wall, or it can be partially open and sit on a shelf. Boxed Beauty is posted for day 29 of Art Every Day Month. By Heather Brush. For sale.

Azure Obscured

Azure Obscured

4″ x 8″  Azure Obscured is a mixed media canvas I did in experimentation of color and texture. I was inspired by the fall blue sky and a song Regina Spektor sings about the color blue. This piece uses acrylic, modge podge, pattern and tissue papers, oil pastel, chalk and pencil.

Captured for Eternity

Captured for Eternity

5″ x 17″  Captured for Eternity is an assemblage piece in honor of photography. For those who remember actual film. The base was a candle tray, found at Goodwill. Lining it are photo negatives from my own stash. I was a photog fanatic back in high school and college. The Brownie camera is one I’d picked up at a junk shop: an icon of American photo taking. The pictures are from an antique photo album I’d found at a small shop a couple of years ago, just for projects such as this. I love the feel of them, the family love they embody, the innocence.

Captured for Eternity

The quote around the edge is credited to Brigitte Bardot: “A photograph can be an instant of life captured for eternity, that will never cease looking back at you.”

Little Goldie Goldfish

Little Goldie Goldfish

9″ x 12″ Little Goldie Goldfish is a mixed media canvas that was a labor of love. I’m 42 years old and this piece is about a song I learned when I was about 4 years old. I still know all the words and if you ask me nicely I will sing it for you.

Little Goldie Goldfish

I recycled a box canvas for this piece…an old project that never came to completion. So it began with some layers of paper and gesso, to which I added layers of acrylic, modge podge, pattern paper, and oil pastel. The fish was a found item, made of plaster, and repainted.

8 1/2″ x 17″  Picture This is an assemblage piece that just came together, virtually on its own. I gather bits and pieces when I get feeling that I might make something of them. The box camera was found at a junk shop, the book is from Goodwill, and the film proof sheets are something I’ve held onto since high school photography class. I loved that class. My friend Lorraine is in some of those shots, and my cat Pusscat.

Some of the first photos I ever took were on a camera like this. The top flips up and you look down into the viewfinder to frame your photo. This piece would make a nice gift for any fabulous photogs you know.

Immortal Light

Immortal Light

5″ x 5″  Immortal Light is a mixed media piece on small box canvas. I’ve been playing with color and texture in answer to inspiration I received from Regina Spektor singing a song that mentions stars and light. That, and the awesome expanse of sky view I have here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I tried to capture that mixture of blue and pitch dark, and added a veil of night.

Immortal Light

I tried to think of what could possibly portray the vibrant light of stars and the best I could do was a handful of old sparkle gems that were floating around in one of my button boxes. I like the effect.

It’s Just Old Light

It's Just Old Light

5″ x 5″  It’s Just Old Light is a mixed media piece on tiny box canvas. I was playing with texture and color in answer to inspiration from Regina Spektor and a song in which she sings about the stars and how they are just old light. I wanted to capture the depth of colors in the night sky but also the vibrance of starlight. Not sure I answered my inner vision, but I like the way it came out.

It's Just Old Light

I used acrylic, modge podged bits of pattern paper, and oil pastel blended with linseed oil. The stars are bits of mirror.
