Woodpile Tree

Woodpile Tree

18 1/2″  x  21 1/2″   Woodpile Tree is an assemblage piece in my tree series. Old dominoes make up the tree, hence the name “woodpile” from a term used in the game for the pile players take their pieces from. Also known as the “boneyard,” which I like better, but since the dominoes are not of bone, but of wood, I chose the more proper term. The box was a partitioned shadowbox, which I renovated and lined with a greenish blue paper to give a bit of color.

Among the old dominoes, I found one hand made replacement piece. I love the look and feel of it and rather than it being lost among the branches of the tree, I felt it needed some attention. It sits at the base of the tree, adhered to the magestic box frame. The work can be hung, or stand alone.

Birth

Birth

5″  x 12″  Birth is an assemblage piece in my tree series. An acorn sprouts life in metal form. A silver glass ball from a candle holder, metal sheeting, wire, and bell top from an alarm clock make up the acorn. Following the theme I started, the baby tree is boxed. Natural moss lines a wooden jewelry box, adorned on the backside with an antique wooden acorn.

Concave Canopy

Concave Canopy

7 1/4″  x  14″  Concave Canopy is a mixed media assemblage piece in my tree series. The antique box inspired the work with its soft natural color and smooth texture. I needed to fill it with nature. Using paper pattern material to form the trunk and branches was an easy choice as the color went so well with the box. Flat and rounded rocks form the hill, and dried moss takes the form of the green leaf canopy. Stands alone or can be hung on a wall.

Cherry Blossom

Cherry Blossom

8 1/2″  x   12″   Cherry Blossom is a mixed media assemblage in my tree series. This cherry tree was created from sticks of sketching charcoal and pink antique beads. The box is painted wood, in a dark cherry color on the outside and a mustard yellow and grey inside. The inside cover of the box reads faintly, “Lovliest of trees, the cherry tree, is hung in bloom, along the bough.” From a poem by A.E. Houseman.  An antique cherry blossom clip on earring adorns the cover.

Childsplay Tree

Childsplay Tree

9″ x 20″  Childsplay Tree is an assemblage piece in my Tree Series. Imagining how a child envisions a tree using building blocks was pretty easy for me. I’ve never quite grown up and I spent countless hours with my own kids playing with blocks and other toys. Watching the creation of something through their minds has always been inspirational. Though my kids are teenagers now, I cherish that time spent with them.

This piece allowed me to be in those moments again, and make them permanent.

The theme of this series is Trees in Boxes, so I used a set of children’s stacking boxes, covered in sewing pattern paper to give them a more united appearance on the outside. The inside colors are original and evoke nature’s colors. The tree is comprised of building blocks, a wooden yo-yo and Lincoln Logs.
