Some Secrets Are Very Hard to Keep

Secrets

4″ x 8″  Some Secrets Are Very Hard to Keep is an assemblage, for Megan, my daughter. An iron bird sits on a golden branch, holding a secret in his beak. It must be a very important secret, for he is held down with barbed wire, trapped under glass, and wrapped in more wire.  A wax seal tops the glass, iconic symbol of secrets kept.

Secrets

When I was little girl and my parents were divorced, my father would learn things about my life through my sisters or my mom, like how my grades were or that I’d made it into all-state chorus, and he would surprise me in his knowledge, telling me a little bird told him. I believed he had some magic source. The bird as messenger has always been a touching symbol to me.

Keeping Secrets

10″ x 6″ x 8″  Keeping Secrets is an assemblage piece, utilizing an antique wooden box, blown glass fixture and other found objects. The iron bird holds a scroll, his eyes twinkling. All my life, my father would find out things about me and my life from my mother and sisters, but when I questioned how he knew he would tell me “A little bird told me.” This little bird is being kept under glass and under lock and key.

I adore this piece for the idea of it and for the fact that it seemed to pull itself together on its own, only using me as a means to an end. I post it happily for day 15 of Art Every Day Month. By Heather Brush.
