Slow Rider

Slow Rider

7 1/2″ x 10 1/2″  Slow Rider is an assemblage carrying on my series of fairy tale and fable pieces. The Tortoise and the Hare is an Aesop fable that has been retold many times. Here, the hare hitches a sleepy ride atop the tortoise.

Slow Rider

The pair trudge through the forest, complete with trees created from moss and sewing pattern paper. The wooden box is lined with bits of an antique childrens’ book, complete with a wonderful illustration of the story.

One of my favorite parts of this piece is how the found objects came to me. The stoneware tortoise was found at a Goodwill and I tried to think of how I would create the hare. Some weeks later I had the urge to go to another Goodwill, went straight back to the housewares section and found the sleeping rabbit on the shelf. It was kismet.

The tortoise seems happy enough to carry the load to the finish line.
