Taste of Summer Innocence

Taste of Summer Innocence

4″ x 8″  Taste of Summer Innocence is an assemblage depicting many a summer night from my childhood. Chasing fireflies with a coffee jar was one of my favorite things to do. For this piece I used an antique Maxwell House jar, reminiscent of the ones Grandma saved for me. The lightning bugs are created from holiday light covers and bits of metal my dad had found with his metal detector and saved for who knows how long. Do you recognize the backs of clip on earrings?

Every lightning bug haven needs a few leaves (these, made of beads and metal) to make the inhabitants feel at home, and of course, air holes in the top. The bugs are mounted on wire and chain, and so they don’t remain stationary when the jar is moved. The resulting sound of a slight clink against the glass is almost realistic.
